Sterla Walker Hansen

February 18, 1936 — February 11, 2021

Sterla Walker Hansen

After a full life of service to her family, church and community, Mom passed away on February 11, 2021 due to a twenty year battle with vascular dementia. She had a humble and grateful heart, a selfless love, a genuine kindness and concern for others. During the many years of needing care, she wished she were providing care rather than receiving. We thank all the friends and caregivers who assisted Sterla, especially Mindy and her second family at Carrington Court.

Sterla was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on February 18, 1936. She attended school in Pocatello and graduated from Poky High in 1954. After high school she began a lifelong courtship with Wm. Earl Hansen. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on May 31, 1957. Their life brought them to Salt Lake City in 1959 where they purchased the family home in West Valley City.

It was there that she devoted her full time to being an extraordinary mother to her children, Greg, Rich, Marcey and Rob. A meticulous home maker, advisor and friend to each of them. She loved genuinely and generously.

During her life, she loved reading, sewing, and doing crafts and was a superb cook (her apple pie was always in demand.) She continued to improve her ability to be a good mother by continuous study of periodicals and books concerning effective child development. She gave her all in support of each of her children as they learned the lessons of life.

She was faithful and dedicated to her church callings, including Primary organist, Young Adult Advisor, Guide Patrol Leader, Stake and Ward Young Women’s President, Relief Society President’s Counselor, and for over 30 years as Ward Chorister and Choir director. Her favorite calling was as Gospel Doctrine Instructor. Even after the effects of the dementia took away many abilities she was called and served as chorister of the Carrington Court Branch. Her love for and musical ability were never compromised. Her legacy is an unwavering testimony of the Savior and His love for us.

Sterla is survived by her husband, four children: Gregory Lynn (Elaine), Richard Earl (Roberta), Marcene (Todd Westberg), Robert Jerel (Debbie); 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sister, Deanna Hill; sister-in-law Rita Walker.
