Michael Kaye Van Dorn

February 8, 1946 — August 26, 2021

Michael Kaye Van Dorn passed away Thursday, August 26, 2021. He was born on February 8, 1946, to John and Mildred Van Dorn of Orem, Utah. 

From a young age Mike was interested in science, astronomy, and sound/image technology. He was active in student government, civic service, and a BYU Honors Program graduate and MC for the BYU Program Bureau. 

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he loved scouting and served a mission from 1965 – 1967 in the South German Mission. His gift for teaching the gospel influenced his Seminary Students and Church members wherever he taught. He had a way of knowing how to make the gospel relevant in people's lives.

Mike had a discerning ear for the best in music and was a talented professional voice, music director, photographer, writer, and producer. He worked for radio, TV and media companies throughout his career and was passionate about his work, always giving his all to every project. Friends and family will remember the many slideshows he produced for work and family events. He was a retired member of the Utah National Guard.

He loved being in the mountains, hiking, backpacking or skiing in the Tetons, the Colorado Rockies, Southern Utah or the Wasatch Front. He took his children on several adventures. 

He is survived by the love of his life, Aleene Wasden; his children: Jenn Stevenson (Dave), Matt Van Dorn (Sheri), Justin Van Dorn (Kerrah), Liz Dean (Dan), Ali Thackeray (Mark); 13 grandchildren; sister Jolene LeeMaster (Boyd); brother John Van Dorn (Connie); and Aleene’s children: Annette Wasden, Jennifer Rosqvist (Lon), Russell Wasden, Julie Ruger (Jason), Becky Wasden, Spender Wasden, and Ruthann Nielson (Bradley). He was preceded in death by granddaughter Naomi Dean.

Mike was a creative person with an enthusiasm for life. He loved his family dearly, making holidays and special days unique and memorable.  

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, September 8, 2021, 6pm-8pm at the Viridian Event Center, 8030 South 1825 West, West Jordan, Utah 84088.
