Mathew Leander Wahlberg

October 18, 1977 — March 21, 2020

Taylorsville, Utah

Mathew Leander Wahlberg, 42, 1977-2020 beloved father, son, brother, uncle and friend passed away on March 21, 2020 from heart failure, doing what he loved best, being with loved ones in  the mountains.

Mat was born October 18, 1977 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Gerald K. Wahlberg and DeAnne N. Wahlberg. He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints. He loved anything outdoor related, especially camping and fishing. He especially enjoyed it when it involved his family.

Mat was very artistic and enjoyed drawing and doing things with his hands. He was a skilled carpenter and designer and helped to carve the Little Mermaid Entrance arch at Disneyland. He enjoyed working and when he was no longer able to work, he turned his attention and pent up energy to gardening, and he was a great cook.

Mat had a big, if not strong, heart and was particularly happy when he was helping others. He had a marvelous and somewhat warped sense of humor and an infectious laugh. He accepted everyone for what they were.

Even with his health difficulties, this past year has been the happiest of his life. Since his diagnosis a year and a half ago, we have counted each day as a bonus and a blessing. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Elvin and Ruth Wahlberg and Rulon (from whom he inherited his skills) and Shirlene Nichol. He is survived by his parents; daughter Myla Raye Wahlberg; step-son Gage Sorenson; brothers Michael (Terri), Thomas (Tiffany), Adam (Tara), James (Sara); sister Lori Anne Horton (Spencer); numerous nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles; cousins; and his close friend Krista Kotsay and her family.

Due to current circumstances with the national epidemic there will be no funeral service. Mat will be interred at the Garden City Cemetery, Utah, (he loved Bear Lake), Friday, March 27, 2020. There will be a private family graveside service. When all the Covid - 19 crisis has ended we will plan a memorial service for extended family and friends.

A special thanks to Dee and Krista for the care and love you gave Mat this past year.
