Eva Hollingshaus Major

June 7, 1921 — November 12, 2018

Eva Hollingshaus Major, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and wonderful friend passed away on November 12, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the age of 97. Eva was born June 7, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Alois and Clara Hollingshaus. She is the sixth child of ten; she outlived all of her brothers and sisters. She graduated from West High School. She was a daughter of German immigrants who said, "We live in America now, we will learn and speak English". She was proud of her German heritage and loved her parents, sisters and brothers very much. Many times Eva said she was very thankful that her parents joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while living in Germany and then came to America. Eva married Bernard Delworth Major on March 25, 1941 in the Manti Temple. They were married 71 years when Bernard passed away on April 26, 2012. Eva has lived in the same house for over 70 years and she never, never wanted to move away. Eva was a very faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her religion and ward members were very precious to her. She was Relief Society President for almost seven years, Primary President, Primary Secretary for over 30 years, and still a Visiting Teacher at the age of 97. She enjoyed attending temple sessions with the ladies in her ward as often as she could even until she was 94 years old. Eva lived during the Great Depression, during World War II and in the computer age. She never used a computer and never owned a cell phone. She sent many letters that had been hand-written or typed on a typewriter to her grandchildren and ward members while they were away on their missions or at college. Eva was a very special lady. She always put her family and ward members first in her life. She loved to hand select and mail birthday cards and holiday cards to each great-grandchild. She also liked to send a card to friends that needed a special message in happy times and in sad times. She truly cared about all the people she knew, including her beautician that did her hair and the pharmacist and cashier at the pharmacy. Mother was a true example to her family and to others. She always worked hard and went the extra mile. She would have made a great pioneer. Eva enjoyed having family and friends visit her. The family always loved gathering at mom's home. We enjoyed her many desserts, candies and grilled cheese sandwiches. Her Thanksgiving homemade rolls were fabulous. She still bottled peaches at the age of 93 and as each great-grandchild was born, she made a hand-tied flannel baby quilt for them. Eva was very resourceful and frugal. She read the newspaper daily and kept up on what was happening in the world. She liked to talk about politics and sports. She also enjoyed reading the Ensign magazine and the scriptures. Her favorite food before bedtime was ice-cream. Eva always tried to keep a positive attitude. If you asked her how she was doing, she would say "I'm okay", even when she was hurting and not feeling well. Bernard and Eva were blessed with six wonderful children, 19 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren. Their children and spouses are: daughter Ardith Miller (son-in-law Craig Miller deceased 2015), son, Ronald (daughter-in-law Peggy), daughter Pamela Crowder deceased 1976 (son-in-law Donald Crowder deceased 1976), son Kenneth deceased 1999 (daughter-in-law Jill), son Bruce (daughter-in-law Jan), son Michael (daughter-in-law Janet deceased 1984, 2nd wife Loreen, later divorced). Eva is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Bernard and two great-grandsons. The family thanks Dr. Rachel A. Mitchell for mom's health care throughout the years and also for the staff at Aspen Ridge East Transitional Rehab for their kindness and concerns for mom's health and well-being. Thanks also to First Choice Home Health and Hospice for their professional help in mom's last days. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 17, 2018, 11:00 a.m., at the Edison Ward building, 1401 West 700 South. Viewings will be held Friday, November 16th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Road, and again on Saturday prior to services from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, next to her beloved husband, Bernard.
