Burton Farnsworth Brasher

Burton Farnsworth Brasher, age 97 of West Valley City, passed away on July 31, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born March 18, 1921 in Delta, Utah, to Leasil and Amelia Farnsworth Brasher. Married LaVerne Richardson on November 27, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. Graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City. Received a B.A. in Business then went on and received his M.D. Degree from the University of Utah College of Medicine. Practiced family medicine in the Kearns and West Valley Area until his retirement in 1987. Burton served in the U.S. Army, saw active duty during World War II, during the Korean Conflict and the Berlin Crisis. He was a member of the Utah National Guard, where he served as the Utah State Surgeon. Served in the United States Army Reserve, where he served as the commanding officer of the 328 th General Hospital at Ft. Douglas, Utah. Was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Has served on Stake High Councils, Stake Presidencies, and as a Bishop. He also served on the Young Men General Board and General Aaronic Priesthood Committee for the LDS Church. With his wife, LaVerne, served four full time missions in Nigeria, Salt Lake Temple Square, LDS Church Disabilities Employment Center and as a physician for the full-time missionaries in the Salt Lake City Mission. He served for two summers as the LDS Chaplain at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmaron, New Mexico. Also served as a Sealer in the Jordan River Temple. Burton was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America. Served as a member of the Great Salt Lake Council Executive Board, the President of Area II, Western Region, Boy Scouts of America, and as a member of the National Exploring Committee for Boy Scouts of America. Served on the staff of four National Scout Jamborees and on the staff of three World Scout Jamborees. He was given the Silver Beaver Award by Great Salt Lake Council and the Silver Antelope Award by the Western Region, Boy Scouts of America. He served on the Granite District Board of Education and the Utah State Board of Education. Also served on the Kearns Town Council. Served as the President of the Utah Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians and received an "Outstanding Community Service" award from the Utah State Medical Association. He enjoyed going with the Utah Honor Flight Organization to Washington DC and loved to wear red ties. His wife LaVerne passed away in 2011. He is survived by two sons: Burton Kent (Jolene), of San Antonio, Texas, Craig (Susie), Cottonwood Heights; three daughters: Linda (Gregory) Cable, West Valley City, Karen, West Valley City, Ranae (Jerry) Monsen, South Jordan; 20 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held Monday, August 6, 2018, 11:00 am at the Jordan North Second Ward, 4270 South Falcon Street (4145 West). Friends may call Sunday 6:00 8:00 pm at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Monday at the church, 9:30 10:45 am. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park.
