Robert "Bob" Gonzales
February 23, 1951 - February 19, 2026
Robert "Bob" Pedro Gonzales passed away on February 19, 2026, after courageously battling Parkinson's Disease for 25 years.
He was born on February 23, 1951, in Rock Springs, Wyoming, to Virginia Salazar and Robert Gonzales. Throughout his life, Bob always put others before himself, often quietly and without fanfare.
Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Trinidad Gonzales, his children, Robert Gonzales and Jessica (Aaron) Gonzales, and his cherished grandchildren, Xavier and Kal Gonzales. He is also survived by his sisters, Kay Olmsted and Jackie (Shaun) Patrick, and his brother, Jay (Lorie) Gonzales, along with many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
From his earliest days, Bob had a deep love for the outdoors that never left him. Whether fishing during quiet mornings on the water, patiently waiting for a bite, or camping and whitewater rafting, he took every opportunity to be outside. Those fortunate enough to share those moments with him hold those memories close.
Bob graduated from Evanston High School and began his career working as a foreman for the Union Pacific Railroad, helping support himself and his siblings. His strong belief in lifelong learning led him to the University of Utah, where he earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in education.
Bob's life calling was serving students, particularly those from minority and low-income backgrounds. He began his career at Kearns High School and later served at Cyprus High School as a minority advisor, P.E. teacher, and defensive coordinator for the football team. He also led the girls basketball program to a region championship. He went on to work at Granger High School as a counselor and athletic director before retiring in 2008.
Coaching and mentorship were Bob's greatest passions. He devoted countless hours to guiding young men and women to reach their potential both on and off the court. He especially treasured coaching his daughter's basketball teams and later contributed to the girls basketball program at Juan Diego Catholic High School. His legacy of service, mentorship, and love of learning will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.
His family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Aspire Home Health Hospice Care nurses and countless doctors and staff at the University of Utah who cared for him over the years.
A viewing will be held on February 26, 2026, from 6 - 8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Rd. in Taylorsville. A burial service will be held the following day, February 27, at 2:30 p.m. at Redwood Mortuaries at 6500 S. Redwood Rd. in West Jordan.
