Rebecca Lynn Johnson

The world marks special dates throughout history. Days when amazing things happen that change the course of nature, nations and even individuals lives. October 29, 1958 was just such a date for anyone who has been fortunate enough to know Rebecca Lynn "Becky" Hulse Johnson. It was on that date that Becky was born in Salt Lake City to Charles Edward "Ted" Hulse and Sherry Schaffer Hulse.

Becky is the oldest daughter and the third of six children and loves her siblings who love her as well. Her siblings can tell you that you always run a deficit in the "love" department with Becky as she always gives you more love in return than you give to her. Becky has a special relationship with her sister Debi ... they didn't so much "get into trouble" as they encouraged each other to loftier heights and honestly felt incredible joy in their sisterly bond. Amongst their many talents, Becky and Debi were masters of the limerick genre and created hilarious episodes at family parties that will be long remembered. Sadly, decorum and brevity do not allow us to share those here ... but ask any of her family members and they will flash a wry smile and start to giggle at the thought.

Becky was educated in Bountiful, Utah at Stoker Elementary, Bountiful Junior High School and Bountiful High School, graduating in 1976 where she excelled in music and was a Madrigal her senior year. From a young age Becky showed an aptitude for music which became a foundational element in her life. In her youth, along with Debi, she would spend hours singing along with records and making up their own original songs. Becky was also an accomplished pianist and talented organist and taught many young students their first piano lessons ... always with a gentle hand and encouraging demeanor. Becky is blessed with what can only be described as an "angelic" voice as it truly makes you realize what it might be like to hear heavenly choirs of angels. Her love of singing led her to establish a singing group "Echoes of the Heart" with several of her friends where they participated in numerous concerts and programs that brought joy and a testimony of the Savior to many who heard them perform.

Becky met, in her own words, "my Superman" Steve Johnson in her late teens and was courted by and ultimately sealed to Steve on June 1, 1979 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together Becky and Steve were a "power couple" in everything they did, from establishing an eternal family and raising seven amazing children, to camping, to mountain man rendezvous', they were a unique pair with an eternal love for one another that was evident to anyone who knew them. They never wanted to be anywhere or doing anything if the other one was not there with them. Their bond is eternal and their lives together are evidence of what true love can accomplish.

Becky loves her children and they all know it is like the sun rising in the East ... it is a given! She supported them in everything they did and was always a cheerleader for their various endeavors. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother and grandmother and she knows the impact a mother can have in the lives of their children. Her efforts as a mother have produced incredible kids who will gladly share with you what their mother means to them. Inevitably they will tell you that Becky is what any mother should aspire to be and that they will miss having her direct support and motherly influence. 

Perhaps one of the things we will miss most following Becky's exodus from this mortal sphere on July 20, 2026, is her singular ability to love unconditionally ... which was a blessing that so many of us within her circle of love got to experience. Those of us that know Becky realize that this talent stemmed from her ability to see others as the Lord sees them ... she always managed to ultimately maintain an eternal perspective and see others as cherished children of loving heavenly parents. She saw in us the same potential and beauty that our Savior sees ... it is a powerful thing to be loved by someone like Becky who loves you for who you are and can be ... not for who she wants you to be.

Becky is a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has served in many roles within the Church, including in Relief Society, Young Women, Primary, Sunday School and in various Ward and Stake music positions including chorister and organist. Anyone who knows Becky has been the beneficiary of her testimony either through words, songs or actions. She truly lived a Christ-like life and, as her husband Steve has said so many times, Becky really tries to be good and wants to follow the Savior in every way.

Frederick Farrar wrote in his book The Life of Christ, "In any family circle the gentle influence of one loving soul is sufficient to breathe around it an unspeakable calm; it has a soothing power like the shining of the sunlight, or the voice of doves heard at evening "It droppeth like the gentle dew from heaven, Upon the place beneath." Nothing vulgar, nothing tyrannous, nothing restless can permanently resist its beneficent sorcery; no jangling discord can long break in upon its harmonising spell." This sums up Becky's influence in any sphere she might be in ... and one we saw and felt keenly in our family. We are confident that her "gentle influence" is continuing to exercise its "soothing power" in her new sphere of existence.

We love you Becky ... we look forward to seeing you again soon ... and enjoying first-hand the warmth that comes from being in your presence and feeling directly of your love. Mother, wife, grandmother, teacher, sister, friend ... you are the epitome of all of these words and we all remember and celebrate October 29, 1958 as the day when God sent you into our world.

Becky is survived by her eternal sweetheart, Steve Johnson; her children Stephanie (Richard) Lambert, Jeremiah (Chau) Johnson, Marinda (Jamey) Townsend, Morgan (Kenny) Goudy, Lacey (Mark) Lindsay, Hayden (Maddie) Johnson and Carter (Heather) Johnson; her siblings Chuck (Shawna) Hulse, Debi (Rob) Martin, Jay Hulse and Brian (Kristen) Hulse; and 22 grandchildren. Becky is preceded in death by a son, Seth Johnson, by her parents, Charles Edward "Ted" Hulse and Sherry Schaffer Hulse, her brother, Steve Hulse, and her in-laws, Alan Aaron Johnson and Helen Pitman Johnson.

Those wishing to participate in a celebration of Becky's life are invited to join us on September 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Casual dress is preferred and refreshments will be enjoyed. The celebration will be held in person in the cultural hall of the LDS meeting house located at 1750 North 900 West, West Bountiful, Utah 84087.

Becky will be interred near her parents at the Bountiful Cemetery. As Becky's final request, she would love it if you would brighten someone's day by showing love, offering forgiveness, or extending a helping hand. In this way, her legacy will continue, and you can honor her by following her example of loving and caring for others.
