Our Mike passed suddenly on Sunday, October 29, 2023, in Salt Lake City, Utah while visiting family.
He entered the world on October 31, 1967, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey to Phillip and Helene (Lopacinski) Konopka. He attended high school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and continued his education at the University of Minnesota, where he was a local DJ at the university station, broadcasting under the persona Todd Michaels, ("Studio lines are wide open!"). He was an infamous member of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity where he enjoyed general debauchery and cutting class. He completed his degree in Marketing at Central Washington University and went on to have a distinguished career selling coatings and adhesives for multiple corporations.
Mike was a renaissance man who appreciated the world. He loved BMX racing, music, skiing, sailing, scuba diving, food and beverage from around the world, was a relentless slave to pop culture and could fix or repair anything. An accomplished home brewer, Mike was renowned for making exceptional brews, collaborating to establish the Maple Hills Brewing Cooperative, a neighborhood hangout for the thirsty. Mike was never without an awful Dad joke, and he appreciated all animals, feeding the wildlife and making dog biscuits from spent grains. Passionate about friends and family, Mike invested in experiences, travel, and good times.
He is survived by his wife Cathy Fox, children Benjamin Thompson, Robyn Thompson, Camden Konopka, sister Linda Konopka Eason (Bobby), nieces Madelyn, Abegail, and Emily Eason.
Celebration of life, his Mike-Morial, will be held Saturday December 9, 2023, at the River Rock Grill & Alehouse, Maplewood Golf Course, Renton, Washington, from 4:00-8:00pm PST. If you plan to attend, please email Cathy at drumspce@hotmail.com. Mike lived and loved well. In his honor, be like Mike.
