Marty Kent Payne, 82, of West Valley City, Utah passed away in South Jordan, Utah on 10 October 2024 after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born on 29 July 1942 in Pueblo, Colorado, the first of two children of George William Payne and Elma Lavenia Wilcox Payne. They lived in Pueblo until he was seven when they moved to Salt Lake City and later built a home in Granger. He attended Cyprus High for one year until Granger High School was built and he was part of the second graduating class in 1960.

Marty joined the United States Air Force while in high school and held a job as an auto mechanic before making the military his career and taking part in two tours in Vietnam. After retiring from the Air National Guard, he tried a career with Waddell & Reed. He landed a job with Deseret Transportation as a long-haul driver and later managing the Bishops Storehouse in Lindon, Utah.

He met his future wife, Sandra "Sandi" Faye Dunn, in September 1961 and was married on 29 December 1961 and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on 20 September 1968. Marty and Sandi lived in Granger, Utah then moved to Anchorage, Alaska, and Magna, Utah before building a home in Granger, Utah in 1966 where he resided until her passing in 2020. He was lovingly placed into Memory Care in Herriman, Utah and then South Jordan, Utah. A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Marty held multiple church callings including those in the Elders Quorum, Boy Scouts, Bishop, and Stake Presidency. He served a full-time mission as a mission liaison on Sheppard Air Force Base with his wife in the Oklahoma, Oklahoma City Mission from 2005-06. Afterwards they served two inner-city missions in the Utah Salt Lake City North and West Missions, an inner-stake mission with the Salt Lake Granger North Stake, and a service mission with Deseret Transportation. Marty had a love to serve with Sandi and enjoyed this time of his retirement.

Our family and friends outings every summer involved his love of the outdoors and traveling. His mechanic background was helpful in making his GMC truck pull a full trailer with boat and dirt bikes up Parleys Canyon at full speed. He loved to water ski, ride dirt bikes in the mountains, and spend time with family.

Marty is survived by his children: Lonna (Scott) Anderson of Herriman, Utah; Russell of Salt Lake City, Utah; Terrol (Karri) of Las Vegas, Nevada; Boyd (Rachel) of South Jordan, Utah; and Jason of Willard, Utah; along with thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. From his DNA testing, a daughter, Lori (Thomas) Owen, who he never knew about was discovered living in Malad City, Idaho. We are grateful for the care and treatment provided by staff and nurses from Carrington Court and VA Home Base.

Friends and family are invited to attend the viewing on Thursday, 17 October 2024 from 10am-11:45am at McDougal Funeral Home at 4330 S Redwood Road, Taylorsville, Utah.
