Lorene McKeel Shaffer

Lorene (McKeel) Shaffer passed away the morning of August 12, 2026, in her home that she loved and lived in for 55 years. She has been reunited with her loving husband, Elwood, son, John, and loving family and friends.

Lorene was born in Springfield, Missouri on June 21,1926. She was the third of nine children of Leonard and Josephine McKeel. She married her loving husband Elwood Charles Shaffer on January 13, 1950. Elwood and Lorene had four sons that she loved and was very proud of. Elwood and all four sons served honorably in the military following the tradition of their ancestors, as early as the revolutionary war.

Lorene is survived by three of her sons, Don Shaffer, Bob Shaffer, Bill Shaffer, her sister Diane McKeel, her eleven grandchildren, and thirty great-grandchildren.

Lorene was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved the gospel and all the blessings it brought into her life. She served the Lord in any calling that was asked of her with love and enthusiasm. She loved attending the temple often and would spend many evenings reading her precious Book of Mormon for hours.

Lorene was a devoted mother and homemaker. She helped Elwood run their M&S direct mail service company for many years. Lorene and Elwood were also House Parents for The United Way childcare homes, helping take care of at-risk children.

Lorene loved the theater, attending plays whenever possible. She found great joy in her monthly dinner group with friends in her Taylorsville Ward neighborhood. Lorene enjoyed camping out with extended family in the mountains, ending evenings playing Rack-o and Yahtzee.

She found her greatest joy in family, especially her sweet grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and in doing things to entertain them and make them happy. Now she is sharing that love with those that passed before her. They are blessed.

Lorene was preceded in death by her husband Elwood Shaffer, son John Shaffer, her parents Leonard and Josephine McKeel, brothers Bill McKeel and Don McKeel, and sisters Kathleen Berg, Irene Vanderhoof, Gerry Berbert, Bertha Curtis, and June Schaefer.

A viewing will be held on Monday August 17, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4845 S Woodhaven Dr, Taylorsville, Utah. Funeral Service will follow at 11 a.m.

Interment will be at Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 S Redwood Rd Bluffdale, Utah on August 25, 2026, at 10 a.m. due to Utah Veterans Memorial Park's schedule.
