Karl Thorup

June 10, 1959 — July 26, 2025

Karl Leif Thorup, age 66, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, surrounded by his family, after years of battling cancer and heart failure.

Karl was born on June 10, 1959, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to William and Sharon Thorup. Karl was one of nine siblings. He grew up in Millcreek and graduated from Granite High School. After serving two years in the Canada, Calgary mission, he attended the University of Utah, where he earned a bachelor's degree in physics, and a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering.

On February 14, 1983, Valentine's Day, Karl was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity to the love of his life, Tina Ann Larisch. Together they raised, as he would say, "The best eight kids this side of the Mississippi." His favorite time spent was singing around the piano with his family. Karl always enjoyed friendly competition; whether it was arm wrestling, ping pong, or racquetball, he was a worthy opponent. He was beloved by his grandchildren and could often be found doing magic tricks, jumping on the trampoline, or telling stories. He always had a positive disposition and loved to joke. There were no strangers to Karl, only friends.

Karl worked for various engineering companies for over 40 years as an electrical engineer, including consulting through his business ThorupRF. Karl had nationwide recognition for his professional skills. He was an industry leader in design for electromagnetic compliance and qualification testing for airborne systems. Those who worked with him knew him as a positive and humble man who always delivered on his commitments.

Karl was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings over the years. He was a life-long missionary and often invited co-workers and friends to temple square to share his love of the gospel.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Tina, his children, Meagan, Kurt (Chelsea), Sarah Swan (Alex), Peter (Melanie), Stephen (ShaeLyn), James (Kim), Annika Lawrence (Quinn), Elizabeth Romer (Isaac), and 20 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sydnee Peterson.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, August 3, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S Redwood Road Taylorsville, Utah. The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Valois Chapel, 4986 South Valois Drive, Taylorsville, Utah, with a viewing held prior at 10:00 -10:45 a.m.
