Listen to Obituary

Our dear, sweet mother, JoAnn Sutton Harman, age 93, passed away on October 10, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

JoAnn was born on July 15, 1933, in Grantsville, Utah to Arthur Reuben Sutton and Ethel Mary Elfors. She grew up in the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City and graduated from West High School.

JoAnn met Gordon Harman at a church event held on Storm Mountain. The two were later married in the Salt Lake Temple on May 23, 1952. Together they began building a life centered around family, and the memories they would create through the years.

They first lived on Pinocchio Drive, a place JoAnn especially loved because it kept her close to her childhood home and the family she cherished so much. She shared a special closeness with her mother and other family members, and those connections remained an important part of her life. JoAnn and Gordon later moved to the Taylorsville-Bennion area where she spent the remainder of her life.

They were blessed with five children: Sherrie Ann (Dennis), Jackie Lynne (Dave), Douglas Gordon (Lynne), and Pennie; also, Shawn Arthur who preceded her in death in 2017.

JoAnn was a hard worker who loved her jobs and took pride in helping support her family. Throughout her life she worked at KUTV, Shoppers Discount, and Granite School District as a lunch lady. She held many jobs over the years, always doing what she could to help provide for those she loved.

Music was one of JoAnn's great loves. She loved to sing and share her beautiful gift with others through several singing groups including the Jay Welch Chorale and the Choral Arts Society of Utah. She also sang alongside many dear friends and enjoyed years of singing with some of her closest neighborhood friends, whom she loved very much. Music brought her joy, friendship, and countless cherished memories.

One of JoAnn's most special qualities was her ability to make friends wherever she went. She was an instant friend to those she met at work, through her church service, among neighbors, and even in her later years at Capitol Hill Senior Living Center. People who know JoAnn will remember her as loving, kind, welcoming, and blessed with a wonderful sense of humor. She had a special way of making people feel comfortable and cared for, and she formed friendships that remained dear to her heart.

JoAnn loved serving in the Relief Society and fulfilling other church callings. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she loved her Heavenly Father and her Savior, Jesus Christ, very much. Her faith, service, and love for others were an important part of the legacy she leaves behind.

JoAnn is survived by her sister Norma Bird (Greg), sisters-in-law Diane Sutton and Louise Sutton; also, her children, 12 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Gordon, her son, Shawn Arthur, her grandson Robert Nathan, her brothers Arthur T., Warren E., Richard L., John, and sister Donna Anderson.
