James William Madden
January 13, 1931-April 21, 2025
James passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025 at the age of 94. He was born in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania to Robert and Thelma Madden. He married Beverly Cashman on December 23, 1951. They raised their family, Jody, Penny, and Mark, in Brooklyn Center Minnesota.
Jim served in the Navy during the Korean War and retired from the Navy Reserves following 20 years of service.
He spent his career working for Burlington Northern Railroad. He knew the rail yard inside and out.
Jim was a friend to all. No matter where he went, it was a safe bet that he would know someone or if he didn't, he would quickly make a friend. He was a happy guy who loved to smile, tease, and laugh. He had a deep belly laugh that was contagious. He loved to tell stories. It was often hard to tell where the truth ended in the story, but that was part of the fun of Pappap's stories.
He loved to help people along his path. He was never afraid to offer a hand to anyone in need. He loved ushering at church and getting to know everyone who showed up. It was at church he found the value in second chances.
He loved sneaking treats to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They always knew if they asked Pappap for a treat, the answer was a definitive yes.
Fishing was one of his favorite hobbies. There are many stories of his days on the lake or in the ice house. He loved animals, all dogs brought a smile to his face, particularly over the last few months.
He loved his family and was proud of their many accomplishments. We have no doubt he is thrilled to be reunited with Beverly.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three siblings. He is survived by his children: Jody, Penny, Mark, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Thank you to all those who have been a friend, cared for, or loved Jim and his family.
Interment will be in the Fort Snelling cemetery on July 8, 2025.
