James "Jim, Jimmy" Edwin Harman
Jim was born March 11, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the only child of Ferris Harman and Ruth Whitehead Harman. He married Dorothy "Dot" Heywood Harman November 4, 1955, in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was an active member of the church holding many ward and stake positions. He also served as a temple worker in the St. George Temple.
He grew up in Granger, Utah where he attended Monroe Elementary. He was the first class to graduate from Valley Junior High then graduated in 1953 from Cyprus High School where he had the same chemistry teacher as his father. He played baseball as a second baseman and was in a club for aeronautics and choir. During his senior year at the choir assembly he sang solo "You'll Never Walk Alone." He attended the University of Utah and studied mechanical engineering. He worked at Kennecott Copper Mine while attending the University. He worked several years at EIMCO as a Mechanical Engineer. Two of his grandsons have worked at the same company and have seen his hand in projects that their grandpa engineered. He retired at age 60 and moved to St. George, Utah to the farm where mom was born and he was able to continue his love of horses and fruit trees. Dad loved his cars and owned 17 different vehicles. His favorite was a red 1940 Ford convertible.
Dad was the smartest person around. He had a very analytical brain and could help us with any subject. He was our "GOOGLE" growing up because he could answer any question. Fishing was one of his passions, but 6 kids in a 12 foot aluminum boat didn't allow him a very good chance to do much fishing. When the grandkids visited, he was always awake first to fix everyone French toast and the best maple bacon around. His friends were very important to him. After mom passed away, he had NormaRae and his lady friends that he played cards with. He attended continuing classes at Utah Tech and also loved wood burning, painting, and listening to his old country music.
Jim was a member of the Days of 47 Rodeo committee for many years. He was an avid golfer, practicing his putting anywhere and everywhere. At 84 years old, he took first place on the Gold Tees-Net at Sky Mountain Golf Course in Hurricane, Utah and could still compete with anyone.
Jim was blessed with 6 children, 20 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren. He is survived by four of his children: James (Julie) Harman, Linda Dastrup, Penny (Wes) Barney and Kathi (Ryan) Dial. Jim was preceded in death by his wife Dottie, his daughter Connie (Brandon, still living) Barney, and his son David Harman.
Dad is finally able to sleep and we are sure he is about a MEDIUM.
