Jack Odell Marsh of Eagle Mountain, Utah, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, of causes incident to Alzheimer's disease. He was 78 years old. Jack was born to Harry and Margie Nielson Marsh on July 19, 1947, in Tooele, Utah. Throughout his school years he attended Tooele Public Schools, graduating from Tooele High School in 1965. Jack began swimming at a very young age and swam competitively while in school. As a member of the Tooele High swim team, he set several new records and was a valuable asset to the team. He continued team swimming through his freshman year as a student at Utah State University.
Jack was a lifelong devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved serving the Lord. Upon completion of his first year of college, he served for two years as a missionary in the Central British Mission of the Church. After returning to the states, he continued his college studies at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Soon after starting at BYU, he met Jeanette Avery of Phoenix, Arizona, who was also a BYU student. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 9, 1969. Together they had seven children: Jack II, Jennifer, Joanna, Jessica, Jeremy, Joel, and Judy.
Jack worked in the computer industry his entire professional career. He began as a computer operator in the early 1970's, moving quickly into programming while working for Transportation Management Services and then IML Freight, both in Salt Lake City. In 1984 Jack was hired as a programmer/systems analyst at Central Wisconsin Transport in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. During his three years in Wisconsin he served on national transportation industry committees, working on the computerization and regulation of the industry. He also taught several classes in programming at the local technical college. At the end of those three years Jack moved his family to Scottsdale, Arizona. He worked as a computer consultant for several years before being recruited by American Express in Phoenix. In 1997 he was transferred to the Salt Lake City American Express division, where he was tasked with heading up the American Express Y2K conversion. Jack eventually retired from AMEX in 2009.
Through all the years of Jack's career he continued in volunteer Church service. Most of those years were spent working with and teaching the youth. He taught seminary classes to high school students for over 10 years and religion classes to college students for another three years. Jack also enjoyed many years of teaching Gospel Doctrine classes to adults. After his retirement, he continued in missionary work, serving two missions with his wife Jeanette. Together they served two years in the England Leeds Mission and one year in the Utah Ogden Mission. Thay also served together as ordinance workers in the Jordan River Utah Temple and the Ogden Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Jack is survived by his wife Jeanette Avery Marsh, seven children Jack Marsh (Rebecca), Jennifer Penrod (Eric), Joanna Marsh, Jessica Yates (Mark), Jeremy Marsh (Leah), Joel Marsh (Jennifer), and Judy Cameron (Patrick). He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Margie Nielson Marsh.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 30th, 2025, at 11:00am in the Cedar Trails Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4142 N Lake Mountain Rd, Eagle Mountain, Utah 84005, with visitation beginning at 10:00am at the same location. Arrangements are being handled by McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S Redwood Rd, Taylorsville, Utah 84123. In lieu of flowers, Jack requested that donations be made by those who desire to do so, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Missionary Fund.
