Goldie Ruth Johnson Shedden leaves a legacy of faith, kindness, music, and love for her family. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, she worked hard to provide for those she loved and encouraged them to develop their talents and follow their dreams.
Goldie was born on July 4, 1936, in her aunt's home in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California. She grew up in Colorado and graduated from Manual High School in Denver. Following high school, she volunteered at the USO and the Lutheran Servicemen's Center in Denver, sharing her time and kindness with others.
Her life took a meaningful turn when she met James Robert "Jim" Shedden, a returned missionary who shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with her during their dates. Goldie was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on October 4, 1958. She and Jim were married by their bishop in her home on January 10, 1959. They welcomed their first child on October 13 of that year. On May 16, 1960, they were sealed as a family in the Logan Utah Temple.
Together, Goldie and Jim raised five children. They moved to Greeley, Colorado, in 1971, where they became charter members of the Swedish Club of Northern Colorado. They later moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, followed by Glenwood Springs, where they lived for a couple of years. In 1992, they moved to Utah to be closer to their children and their growing families. After retiring, Goldie and Jim served an 18-month mission for the Church in St. Louis, Missouri.
Goldie loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and welcomed every opportunity to deepen her understanding. She attended BYU Education Week and Time Out for Women conferences, finding joy in learning and strengthening her faith. She served with compassion in her Church callings and treasured the friendships she formed through her Family Home Evening group, Scripture Class group, and the communities she called home.
Music held a special place in Goldie's heart. At Christmas, music was an essential part of the celebration. She encouraged her children to develop and share their musical talents, filling family life with a love of music that will continue through generations.
Goldie is survived by her five children: James Brent (Beverly) Shedden of West Jordan, Utah; Sandra Kay (Kevin) Beckwith of Syracuse, Utah; Robert Craig (Christia) Shedden of Texas; Linda Shedden, who lovingly cared for her; and Julie Ruth (Scott) Carter of Tooele, Utah; as well as 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Shedden; her sister, Janet Goodman; her father, Arvid Johnson; and her mother, Helga Viola Julieth Vaughn.
Goldie will be remembered for her enduring faith, compassionate service, love of music, and devotion to her family. Her words of encouragement and the kindness she taught by example will remain with those who knew and loved her.
A viewing will be held on Friday, October 30, 2026, at 10:00 - 10:45 a.m., at the Welby Third Ward, 8385 South 4800 West, West Jordan, Utah. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m.
