Frederic Marsh Civish, Jr. passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026, at the age of 95. Fred was born in Sunnyside, Utah on February 15, 1931, as the first of 3 children to Emma Preston Civish and Frederick Marsh Civish, Sr. Fred grew up in the Price, Utah area and graduated from Carbon High School. He also lived in San Diego and Bakersfield, California as well as Salt Lake City, West Jordan, Ogden, and Saratoga Springs, Utah.
During his life Fred enjoyed participating in Native American spiritual rituals & culture, teaching, psychology, cooking, card tricks, and coin collecting. Maybe most of all, he was passionate about writing. As a published author, Fred wrote about a variety of important historical events & subjects. His published books include:
· The Sunnyside War (an interesting read regarding the historical Sunnyside Coal Mine strike)
· Losing Weight for Life: Eating What You Like with the RMR Diet (the best strategy he discovered to lose weight and turn his health around)
· The Three Sentinels (an expose work of the Mountain Meadows Massacre)
· Out of the Gulch, Onto the Mountain Top (stories from Fred's life)
When he was a young man, Fred did his duty to stand for freedom as a member of the Navy during the Korean War. After being stationed in Japan, he was the first of the Civish clan to enjoy Japanese cuisine. He passed this love of Japanese food on to scores of his family members and it is still a favorite amongst those related to him. Further, Fred affected the lives of countless people by being the first to introduce sushi into Greater Salt Lake area grocery stores-now a common section in grocery chains. Fred went on to earn a master's degree in psychology and held a prominent position with the "UT State Training School", now known as the "UT State Developmental Center". In his later years, Fred explored Native American spiritual rituals and eventually found his belief in God. He credits the miracles in his life for leading him to his faith in a Higher Power.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Glenda Worthington, his son Steven Civish, his ex-wife Jane Powell Tarrance, his longstanding love and partner Roberta Roberts Mahin, as well as his step-mothers Madge Hansen Civish, and Norma Koller Civish. He is survived by his brother: William (Billie) Civish and by 5 of his children: Vicki (Glen) Dial, Frederic (D. Maria) Civish III, Corinne Civish (David Kirkland), Vivian (Mark) Frederick, and Cynthia (Michael) Dempsey. He is also survived by his 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by his close friend and nephew: William (Kim) Civish, Jr.
A Memorial Service for Fred will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 11:00 am at McDougal Funeral Home located at 4330 South Redwood Road, Taylorsville, Utah. Interment to be in Price, Utah later that day.
