Eugene (Gene) Douglas Thomson Sr. was born in Salt Lake City on February 16, 1951, the son of Jim and Dorothy Thomson. He passed away on April 27, 2026, at the age of 75 after a valiant effort to recover from a stroke two years ago. Gene hoped to be as successful moving on from the stroke as he was after his very successful lung transplant nearly five years ago.
Growing up in Rose Park, Gene was an avid athlete enjoying many sports. As an adult he played men's fast pitch softball and developed a life-long passion for golf, playing anywhere and anytime he could. Over the years his home featured many trophies for both sports. His favorite golf course was the Ridge in West Valley where he also worked after his retirement.
Gene married his sweetheart Kaylene Bills on September 5, 1970. Together they have three children, Doug Thomson, Jeff Thomson, and Kimberly Darling. Gene and his family have lived for over 40 years in Taylorsville.
After a short time serving in the US Marines, Gene was employed for thirty-five years at Century Link, surviving as the company changed from Mountain Bell to US West, then to Quest, and finally Century Link. Through the years he served as a draftsman, and an installer, and repairman.
Gene's greatest loves were his family, particularly new babies, and golf. Sorting through pictures taken over many years it was hard to find any without Gene holding or playing with a baby or surrounded by the tools of golf.
Gene is survived by his wife Kaylene (Kay) Bills Thomson, sons Doug and Jeff, and daughter Kimberly, 8 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren, and his sister-in-law Shelley Thomson, brother Victor Thomson, and sister Sherry Vanlewin.
