On October 6, 2025, longtime Taylorsville resident Eugene Lee Evans, 86, passed away peacefully. Gene was born in Miami, Arizona to Elsie Ellen Baxter and Hughie Lee Evans. He was the third son of five children and spent his Arizona childhood riding wild burros and playing with snakes and scorpions.
He attended Miami High School before joining the United States Air Force. Gene served from 1955-1959 as an A2C with the Northeast Air Command, specializing in radar. He started working as a young teen at the gas station near his home and began a life-long passion for cars. Gene worked for several decades in the trucking industry, first for IML as a mechanic and then as a commercial, long-haul driver for Yellow. He was a longtime member of the Teamsters Union.
Gene met his wife Kay at a Hill Air Force Base dance in 1959. They married on October 29, 1960, and had four children. This year they would have celebrated their 65th anniversary together. Gene was a very hard worker and provided well for his family. He spent several summers with his sons fixing up clunkers for the Kamas Demolition Derby. He loved camping and hunting and built a family cabin in the Uintah mountains with his sons. Gene was always good natured, had a dry sense of humor, and could get up to some mischief at times. In his later years, he really enjoyed keeping up with all his grandchildren and caring for his rescue dog, Sadie.
Gene is survived by his wife Kay, his sons Kevin (Diane) Evans, Kelley (Paula) Evans, Gene Evans, daughter Tricia Ruiz, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Larry Dean Evans, Margaret Evans, Hughie B. Evans, Marcia Ann Evans, and his nephew Victor Eugene Evans.
