Marie Nelson died peacefully at her home at the Meadow Peak Assisted Living Facility in Taylorsville on the afternoon of May 19, 2026. She died from complications of a major stroke.

Family and friends were at her bedside.

Born Edith Marie Rotzler on December 28, 1933, in Salt Lake City, she was the daughter of Joseph Matthias and Vera Elizabeth (Boyce) Rotzler. She grew up in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School in 1951.

She married Jesse Robert Nelson on September 18, 1951 in Evanston, Wyoming. She spent most of the next two decades traveling with Bob for his career as a pilot in the U.S. Navy. After Bob's retirement from the Navy in 1974, they moved to Highland, Utah where they worked at American Fork Hospital for many years, retiring again in 1997.

Marie was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the two of them served two full-time missions; the first in Switzerland and the second in Montana. They moved to Daybreak in South Jordan in 2008 and again to Summit Vista in Taylorsville in 2023.

Marie loved music. She was an accomplished pianist and vocalist, having studied with Mrs. Bianche Christensen of Salt Lake City. Marie sang with the Ralph Woodward Chorale in Provo for many years. She was also an accomplished chorale director, directing many church and family choirs, including the choir for the groundbreaking ceremony and one of the dedication choirs for the Mount Timpanogos Temple.

Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her parents, her brother Joseph, and her beloved sister Ann Reid, along with her daughter, Anne Johnson, sons Daniel and Stephen, and daughter-in-law Katrina (Michael). She is survived by sons James (Carol) of Taylorsville, Michael of Riverton, and daughter Robin (Nolan) Money of Salem. In addition, she has 20 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A Viewing will be held Friday May 29, 2026, at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road from 6-8:00 p.m. An additional viewing will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026, 9-10:15a.m.

At the Bernina Ward Building at 3045 W. Bernina Drive, Taylorsville, Utah.

The funeral services will begin immediately afterwards. Interment, Highland City Cemetery later that afternoon,
