It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cory LaVarre Briggs, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on July 14, 2025, at the age of 70.
Born on December 11, 1954, Cory was a man of deep integrity, quiet strength, and endless love for his family. He spent his life surrounded by the things he cherished most, his loved ones and the peace he found in the great outdoors.
A devoted family man, Cory found his greatest joy in the time spent with those he held dear. Whether it was teaching his children how to cast a line, sitting around a campfire telling stories, or sharing quiet mornings in the mountains, he passed down not only skills and traditions but also a deep respect for nature and the simple pleasures of life.
Hunting was more than a pastime for Cory -- it was a way of life. It was where he felt closest to those he loved. He was the kind of father who led by example -- strong, steady, and always ready to lend a hand, or offer a word of wisdom.
Cory was a man of many passions, a true character whose love for life was felt most deeply through food, family, and the joy of sharing both. Known by many as a BBQ master, he brought people together over smoked meats, legendary summer cookouts, and breakfasts that still can't be replicated. Food was how he showed love, and he spared no expense when it came to feeding those he cared about.
Beyond the kitchen, he was a man of the land and raising rabbits, chickens, turkeys, and ducks, and growing tomatoes, pumpkins, and corn even in the toughest Utah soil. He had a deep love for music, dancing, his Harley rides, and old Chevys and Dodges (never a Ford). Holidays were sacred, Christmas at his house was pure magic, filled with Mannheim Steamroller, laughter, and Cadbury eggs at Easter that will forever spark memories of his joy and presence. He never missed a holiday call, a chance to gather, or a moment to make someone feel at home. He lived fully, gave generously, and left behind stories and meals that will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife, Melanie Briggs; his children, Chad Briggs (Ryan Alley), Monika Luing (Nathan Luing) and Kyle Briggs (Brittany Briggs); and his grandchildren (Konner, Sophia, Remington, Nixon, Krue and Ella) who were the light of his life.
A viewing will be held Sunday, July 20, 2025, at 6:00 PM at McDougal Funeral Home (4330 South Redwood Road, Taylorsville), and a graveside service will follow Monday, July 21, 2025, at 11:00 AM at West Jordan Cemetery (7925 South 1300 West, West Jordan).
Though we grieve his absence, we find comfort in the places he loved most; in the rustle of the leaves, the warmth of a campfire, the stillness of a mountain morning. His spirit lives on in every shared meal, every family tradition, and every quiet moment under the stars. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered. We love and miss you Cory, Dad, & Grandpa!
