Charles Raymond Walter, Jr
3/10/1947 - 6/25/2026
Charles Raymond Walter, Jr. left this mortal life on June 25, 2026, after a very brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 10, 1947, in Silver City, New Mexico, to Charles Raymond Walter, Sr. and Pearl Leona Hammond Walter. He was the oldest of three children.
Charles grew up in Lordsburg, New Mexico, where he graduated from high school in 1965. During school, he enjoyed playing basketball and participating in the marching band. Upon graduation, he had planned to serve during the Vietnam War but was unable to do so after failing his physical fitness tests on two separate occasions because of a basketball knee injury. Instead, he attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, where he played the alto saxophone in the NMSU marching band.
Charles later served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Australia. This experience was one of the highlights of his life and helped shape the course of his future. It was there that he was introduced to chiropractic care and, most importantly, met his future wife, Lorraine.
Charles married Lorraine Mary Jarvis on July 11, 1970, in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Together they raised six children and built a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. Charles was a constant supporter, provider, and protector of his family.
Shortly after they were married, Charles and Lorraine moved to Davenport, Iowa, where he attended Palmer College of Chiropractic and earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1973. They later returned to New Mexico to raise their family, and Charles spent the remainder of his life using his training, keen insight, and genuine concern for others to serve and help loved ones, friends, and the surrounding community. This was his greatest passion in life.
In addition to his career in healthcare, Charles served as a city council member and president of the school board in Jal, New Mexico. He and Lorraine also started several small businesses to serve the community, including a video store, a snow cone stand, and a newspaper business.
Charles was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved his Savior, Jesus Christ. Some of his final words were, "I love the Lord." Throughout his life, he faithfully served in many Church callings, including a Branch President and, most recently, a Primary teacher. He especially enjoyed singing hymns and other sacred music. During the last few years of his life, Charles treasured attending the temple each week with Lorraine and their dear friends.
Other joys in Charles's life included earning his pilot's license and flying small airplanes. He loved technology and was exceptionally knowledgeable about it. He was the first person in Jal to own a personal computer and later taught computer classes for adults at the local high school in his spare time. He was also a licensed amateur (ham) radio operator.
Charles was known for his quiet wisdom, quick-witted humor, curiosity, and willingness to help anyone in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Sr. and Pearl; his sister, Ronda; and his granddaughter, Emmalee. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 56 years, Lorraine; his brother, Keith (Pat); and his children: Jenae (Patrick), Mindy (Scott), Kara (Steve), Nathan (Ashley), Michael (Janai), and Kurt. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and their spouses, nine great-grandchildren, and countless extended family members and friends.
Charles leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, devoted service, compassion, and deep love for his family. His example will continue to bless generations to come.
