Listen to Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, and grandfather, Charles Riley Miller, age 89, of Layton Utah who passed peacefully on March 19, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. He was born to parents Glen and Bessie Miller on September 19, 1936, in Nampa Idaho.  He graduated from Boise High School on May 22,1955 and enlisted in the US Air Force, where he served as a jet engine mechanic on the B-47 Stratojet. Following his service in the military, he earned his bachelor's degree in science at the University of Utah and later went on to earn his master's degree in mathematics from the University of Missoula in Montana.

Charles taught Calculus and Geometry at Olympus High School from 1967-1994, where he was affectionately known as "Chuck Miller." During his tenure at Olympus, he also served as the cross-country coach and later as the coach of the golf team. He was actively involved as a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics where he served a term as president of the Utah Chapter.  In 1986, Charles was nominated for and won the National Science Foundation's Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.  He was also invited to spend many summers reading and scoring the math portions of the ACT test.

Charles Miller retired from teaching in June 1994 and moved with his wife to Gooding, Idaho. There he spent the next 25 years enjoying his life passions:  golf, shooting, hunting, fishing and traveling. During his retirement, he also discovered a true love and talent for woodworking that enabled him to hand-craft beautiful furniture and other useful items for his own home as well as for family and friends. These heirloom items will be loved and cherished for generations!

Charles moved back to Utah in March of 2018 to be closer to family. His final residence was at the Fairfield Village in the Parkview facility where he was affectionately known as "King Charles." There, he was loved and well-cared for by everyone who knew and adored him, until he passed away from complications of aging.

Charles married Rhodora Kingsford, his sweetheart on June 12, 1958, in the Logan, Utah LDS temple. He is survived by her and their five children:  Julie Taylor (Marv-deceased), John Miller (Verlyn), Glen Miller (Brenda), Bruce Miller (Sheila), and Heidi Carroll (Scott), as well as his sister, Jane Baldwin (David Moench) and brother, Craig Miller (Shelly).  He leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Bessie Miller, his sister Ann Meek and his brothers Melvin Miller and Gary Miller.

Charles Miller shaped the lives of those around him-not with noise, but with purpose. We honor a man who lived his life fully, gave without expectation, and left behind a legacy of strength, respect, grace, and love. Even in his final years, he remained true to who he was-thoughtful, dependable, and quietly observant.
