9/4/1946 - 11/15/2024
Charles ("Charlie") Orme Barney was born on Sept. 4,1946, in Augusta, Georgia. His mother was Eulaween Phillips Barney, his birth father was Charles Orme Canon Jr., and his father was William West Barney.
Charles passed away/departed on Nov. 15, 2024, in Taylorsville, Utah at the age of 78. Charles was a United States Marine Corps (USMC) Veteran. During his service in the USMC, Charles earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He also earned a Rifle Sharpshooter Badge. He was honorably discharged from military service due to an injury he sustained in Vietnam.
He later attended Weber State University where he earned his nursing license and went on to work in the field of nursing for many years as a Licensed Practicing Nurse. He always maintained his nursing license. Charles was also a Deputy Sheriff for the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Department for several years. He later became a member of the Utah Sheriffs' Association. Charles also became a Private Investigator, establishing Barney's Agency, where he provided private detective services for security, missing persons, runaways, and criminal investigations.
In his later years, Charles became an avid motorcycle enthusiast, and he loved riding his Harley-Davidson Softail Classic and referred to himself as an "old biker".
Likely related to his military service influence, Charles had a very direct personality, and along with that, he also had a very endearing inner kindness and a great sense of humor. He often referred to himself as "Sweet and Innocent" particularly at times when he was being challenging or mischievous. Charles liked to load up the saddlebags on the Harley with protein bars and ride to downtown Salt Lake and give out protein bars to the homeless.
Charles was divorced, and is survived by his daughter, Nicole Lopez, son-in law Christopher Lopez; and grandchild, Asher Lopez; and his two brothers Robert Barney (Sandi), and Wesley Barney (Penny); and three sisters, Marilyn Odeh, Diane McKenzie (JD), and Linda Sue Tanner (Glenn).
He was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Lee Barney Diver, and his parents. Funeral services will be held on May 18, 2026, at 1:00pm at the Utah Veterans Cemetery & Memorial Park, 17111 South Camp Williams Rd., Bluffdale, Utah.
