Listen to Obituary

Brenda Joy Black passed away peacefully at her home on February 10, 2026, at the age of 84. Brenda was born on December 5, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee to Vera Northington and Charles Jones. She lived in Memphis until the age of 9 when she moved with her family to Mobile, Alabama. They later moved from Alabama to Texas, and later to California.

Brenda met Clayton in San Diego, California where he was serving in the US Navy. They married on August 16, 1958. They moved to Coronado and raised 4 sons, William, Frederick, Gordon, and Alfred. They moved from California to Kearns, Utah and then to Hunter, Utah where they spent the majority of their married life together.

Brenda worked many years as a dietician at a hospital. She was also a cashier and manager of the bakery at Hutchinson. She enjoyed the time she spent as an elementary school cafeteria worker and loved the time she spent with the children. But Brenda's greatest joy was the time she spent watching her grandkids, great-grandkids, nieces, and nephews at their various sports and activities. She and papa were known as the "Super Fans"! They never missed a sporting event, recital, performance, or important moment in their grandkids' lives. She lived for these events.

Brenda was an incredibly talented artist, painter, knitter, and ceramic artist. She had an amazing eye for color and detail. Her paintings are displayed throughout her home and the homes of her family members. She was an avid bowler and bowled in many leagues on many nights of the week.

Brenda was preceded in death by her son Fredrick Reed Black in 1981. Her sister Janice passed in 2008, her sister Carol in 2019, brother Johnny in 2023, and her brother Richard in 2025.

Brenda is survived by her husband of 67 years, Clayton Dean Black, her sister Annette Beeler (Alvin), son William (Kay), son Gordon (Anne), and son Alfred (Julie). She is also survived by her 8 grandchildren Jared, Lucas, Alex, Merisha, Cody, Abigail, Dalton, and Rowan. She has 10 great-grandkids and many nieces and nephews.
