Bertha Emilia Boltz
November 10, 1931 - June 1, 2025
Bertha Emilia Boltz, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Up until the end Bertha embodied kindness, grace, compassion, and gratitude. Her infectious smile that lit up the world, her love for family and friends, her appreciation of beauty and her zest for life never wavered. She always expressed gratitude for her long life, full of wonderful and varied experiences.
Born on November 10, 1931, in Guatemala, Central America. As an adult Bertha was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bertha emigrated to the United States where she began a remarkable journey of resilience and growth. She started work in the stockroom at Wolfe's Sporting Goods Store on State Street in Salt Lake City. She was determined to build a better life and enrolled in night school at LDS College to learn English and earn a degree in accounting. Her hard work paid off when she was promoted to the office to put her skills to use. She later joined the Kmart Corporation as the cash cage manager, traveling extensively to train office managers for new store openings. Bertha retired from Kmart three times, but her dedication and cheerful spirit kept bringing her back.
At the age of 80, Bertha found the love of her life, John Boltz. Their marriage was a testament of joy, partnership, and the beautiful possibility of love at any age. From road trips to cruises they shared life to the fullest until John's passing. Her smile shone even brighter during those years, and her love for John was evident to all who knew her.
Bertha's greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a love for collecting clowns, roosters, and jewelry. She was a devoted sports fan cheering passionately for the Utah Jazz , Denver Broncos and University of Utah basketball and football teams. At Jazz games her signature white hair and radiant smile often caught the attention of the camera, capturing her joyful presence.
Bertha had the kind of smile that could light up even the darkest room (it wasn't just her lips that smiled) it was her entire face. Her eyes twinkled like she held a beautiful secret, and her laugh (pure, heartfelt joy) it wrapped around you like a warm blanket, soft and familiar, and a loving embrace. She reminding everyone around her that even in the face of hardships, there was always love, hope and goodness.
Bertha's life was defined by five "F" words: Family, Friends, Flowers, Food and Fun. In her 93 years, she experienced an abundance of each. She created cherished memories with those she loved through meals, conversations, celebrations, and adventures. Her friendships spanned every walk of life, each one special and cherished. She gave and taught the meaning of unconditional love.
Her spirit lives on in all who were lucky enough to have known her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, resilience and the reminder to always find beauty in life's simple joy. Her famous words were "You're off the will".
Bertha was preceded in death by her beloved husband John Boltz, her parents, sisters, brothers, and other family members. She is survived by her three children: Carmen Bunce and her 3 children (Ryan, Jeffrey, their spouses & kids, and Scott); Carlos Pinto and his 3 children (Niki, Alisia Maria and Dora and their spouses & kids); Ana Lucrecia (La Looky) Pinto DeJong and Leslie DeJong (whom she loved as a son) and their 3 children (Jennifer, Alelizabeth, Patrick & their spouses and kids.
