Thomas Earl Black

September 9, 1925 — August 13, 2016

Thomas Earl Black, a man with a loving and compassionate heart, quirky sense of humor, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed peacefully from this life to rejoin his beloved wife Elaine on the other side on August 13, 2016 at the age of 90, in Heber City, Utah. He was born on September 9, 1925 to Wilford Rex Black Sr. and Elsie Isabelle Manning in Bacchus, Utah and was the fifth in a family of eight children. He lived in the Salt Lake, UT and Cerritos, CA areas for much of his life. Worked for the Federal Government for about 35 years and enjoyed 35 years of retirement, playing a lot of golf and watching professional wrestling on TV. Married Elaine Robinson in Coalville, UT on May 21, 1949 and later sealed together in the Salt Lake Temple on June 6, 1955. He adored his children and grandchildren and loved to spend time with them. Tom was a faithful servant and served in many leadership capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including Bishop, Stake Missionary, Elders quorum president, 70's quorum president, and High priest group leader among others. He and Elaine faithfully served in both the Los Angeles and Jordan River Temples for some 20 years. They could think of no other place that they loved to serve more than in the temple. Tom is survived by three of his four children and their spouses: Sherri (Dennis) Nielsen of Herriman, Utah, Shauna (Joe) Diaz of The Woodlands, Texas, and Vickie (Harry) Weyandt of Midway, Utah. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; five brothers; his son Tom Jr.; and one grandson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016, 11:00 a.m., at Westland 4th Ward building, 7171 South 2700 West, West Jordan, Utah. Viewings will be held Friday, August 26th, 6-8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and again Saturday prior to services at the church from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment, Redwood Memorial Estates. The family's gratitude goes to the staff of The Abbington, assisted living in Heber as well as the IHC Hospice staff who lovingly cared for him these past few months.
