LTC Don Rogers Hullinger

September 2, 1935 — October 6, 2017

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Don Rogers Hullinger, age 82, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2017 at the Central Utah Veterans Home in Payson, Utah. Don was born on September 2, 1935 in Naples, Utah to Herald Everett Hullinger and Jennie Lewis. He grew up on the family farm in Vernal where he learned the meaning and value of hard work. He graduated from Uintah High School then attended BYU and the University of Utah. He received a degree from the Tustin Institute of Technology in engineering. On March 22, 1958, Don married his "schatzeli" Elsie Looser of St. Gallen, Switzerland. She has preceded him in death. He is survived by his children Don Rogers (Jenny) Hullinger, Charlotte (Russell) Donaldson, Michelle (Bruce) Cummings, and Jenifer (Brad) Westenskow; 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brothers Dick (JaNee) Hullinger, Floyd (Glenna) Hullinger; sister Venetta (Glen) Probst; and sister-in-law Enid Hullinger. He is also survived by his sweet wife of 8 years, Carol Wood Hullinger and her children. In addition to Elsie, he is preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers Hugo and Paul (Marjorie) Hullinger. In May of 1958, the US Army drafted Don and sent him to serve in Germany. After serving in Europe for 2 years, he was home for 3 months when the Cuban Missile Crisis called him back again into active duty. It was during this year that he received his commission and launched his Army Reserves career. He remained in the Reserves for another 25 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was responsible for individual training of all Army Reserve Personnel in Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. When he wasn't working for Uncle Sam, he was working as a Western Regional Sales Manager for Galigher ASH Company, then with BGA International and finally retiring with EnviroTech Pump Systems in 1998. Don was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many positions including Bishop of the Granger 5th Ward, Bishop of the Taylorsville 30th Ward and Branch President of the 40th Vietnamese Branch of Salt Lake City. He and Elsie served many missions including a temple mission in Freiburg, Germany and Atlanta, Georgia. They served as service missionaries for 3 years at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, 3 years in Military Relations Division, and 6 months as Physical Facilities missionaries at The Visitor Center at Cove Fort. During the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics they helped in the LDS media office. Don loved spending time in the great outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling with family and friends in his many RV's over the years. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage "shop", welding, working with wood, making things and fixing things. It wasn't broken unless Don couldn't fix it. He would plant trees just so that he could have the pleasure of using a chainsaw to cut them down. We will miss his willingness to always lend a hand, his sweet spirit, his quick wit, his laugh, his happy and jovial personality. Thanks to the nurses and staff of the Mervyn Sharp Bennion Central Utah Veterans Home for their constant care over the past 16 months while Don declined due to Lewy Body Dementia. Knowing he was so well taken care of has been a blessing for our family. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 14, 10:00 a.m. at Taylorsville 30th Ward, 4950 South 1950 West. Viewings will be held Thursday, October 12th, 6-8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and prior to services on Saturday at the church from 9-9:45 a.m. Interment, Vernal Memorial Park.
