Joy Anne Goebel

August 26, 1943 — November 30, 2016

Joy Anne Goebel, age 73, passed away November 30, 2016, in West Valley City, Utah. In the days and hours before her death she was able to spend time with all four of her children, several grandchildren, and family friends. She passed in the arms of her youngest daughter and spoke the words "I love you" with her final breaths, which all who were gathered were blessed to hear. On August 26, 1943, Joy was born to Walter William and Alice Marie Cavanaugh Spainhour in Salt Lake City, Utah. Although Spainhour was her legal name at birth, the name Springhower would be adopted within the family and used throughout her life. On September 7, 1963, she married Joseph William Ceule in Kansas City, Missouri. They had three children, Theresa Marie, Michael William, and David Joseph. They later divorced. In the summer of 1971, she married Paul Jackson Goebel in Sarpy County, Nebraska. They had one child, Jennifer Adele. They later divorced. Joy remained single for the rest of her life because John Denver, Charlton Heston (whom she once kissed), and Cliff Richards were unavailable. Joy completed eight years of formal education but did not lack intelligence, street smarts, or savvy. She was always gainfully employed and worked hard to support four children. She was eccentric to say the least, and a modern day gypsy. She loved to dabble in antiques and collectables and search the local thrift stores for treasures. Everything was valuable in her eyes and she enjoyed buying and reselling her treasures at swap meets. Joy loved Burger King Whoppers, ice-cream, Snickers candy bars, bread, and always said you could live on a bag of potatoes and a can of beans. She was a woman of great faith. To know Joy was to know her faith in Jesus Christ. Every conversation with Joy included her quoting Proverbs 3: 5-6. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Her children lacked much growing up, but never lacked knowledge of their Father in Heaven and Savior Jesus Christ. That knowledge is Joy's single greatest legacy to her family. Joy is survived by her children, Theresa (Kirt) Craynor of Layton, Utah; Michael (Pam) Ceule of Mascoutah, Illinois; David (Robin) Ceule of Bountiful, Utah; and Jennifer (Marc Flinders - Fianc) Schaat of West Valley City, Utah; grandchildren in order of appearance, Amber Ceule, Steven Ceule, Michael Ceule, Kalin Craynor, William Ceule, Hannah Ceule, Jacob Ceule, Riley Craynor, Hope Schaat, Nicole Ceule, Michelle Ceule, Shelby Craynor, Henry Schaat, Jared Ceule, and Holden Schaat; great- granddaughter, Eisley Craynor; siblings, Mary (Noel) Heckerson, Mark Springhower, Ray (Kathy) Springhower, Kay (Craig) Holmes, and Kurt (Annette) Springhower; and sisters-in-law, Anna Springhower, and Sandi Springhower. She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Mae, Victor, and Lance. A family service will be held in the summer where Joy will be laid to rest with her parents in Omaha, Nebraska. Arrangements and care of Joy have been under the direction of McDougal Funeral Home in Taylorsville, Utah. Hospice care was provided by Heartwood Hospice, and we extend a warm thanks to Kelsey, Joy's nurse, for her tender care in taking care of all of us!
