Durland Barker Carney

Durland Barker Carney, a much loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away July 14th in Draper Utah after a long and difficult illness. Durland was born April 21st, 1926 in Escalante, Utah. At the age of seven his family moved to Mercur, Utah, where they lived until the beginning of the Second World War. His experiences among the rugged machinery and men of the mining town would shape the rest of his life. Subsequently, Durland attended West High School in Salt Lake City. He spent his senior year in a Naval training program at Treasure Island working on engines of the Pan American Clipper airplanes. Upon graduation Durland volunteered for the Marine Corps and was severely wounded during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Though left with lasting disabilities, it never held him back. After a long convalescence, he entered the University of Utah. In 1947 he married Evelyn Jeanne Sant, a cousin of one of his marine comrades, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They settled in Taylorsville, Utah, where they began their new family, which eventually included two sons and two daughters. During this time he worked as diesel mechanic and machinist for a major heavy equipment supplier in Salt Lake city. In 1953, Durland and his family moved to Northern California to find new employment, where he progressed from machinist to mechanical engineer and eventually to physicist. During his career, Durland received a number of important patents in electronics manufacturing technology. After retiring in 1982, still being very inventive, he and his wife embarked on a new adventure together; that of developing a self-sustaining low impact way of life on a new "gentleman's ranch" in Utah's Southern Cache Valley. After his wife Jeanne passed away in 1997, Durland then began work on a memoir of his war experience and other significant parts of his life, until the full consequence of his injuries eventually overtook him. He is survived by his four children, Michael, Leslie, Todd, and Kimberlee; also by twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; and by friends who respected and loved him. A graveside service will be held at 12pm Tuesday, July 22nd at the Paradise, Utah City Cemetery (274 E 8900 S, Paradise, Utah). Viewing will be held 5pm-7pm Monday July 21st at the McDougal Funeral Home 4330 S. Redwood Road, Taylorsville, Utah.
