Dennis Lyle Sawyer

Loving husband, father, and grandfather, Dennis Lyle Sawyer, age 74, passed away August 11, 2017. Born May 7, 1943, in Omaha, Nebraska. Son of Wanda and Joseph Sawyer. He married Shirley May Gundersen Osness on April 19, 1968, adopting five children in his heart. Shirley was the love of his life and his best friend. Dennis was a political junkie and loved history, which fed his patriotic enthusiasm. He was passionate about traditional values encouraging his children to vote and be involved in the political system. His greatest accomplishment was raising his five children who love him dearly. He provided a loving structure to nurture the values that he held dear. He was meticulous in every way. You could walk into Dennis's garage at any time and everything was in its place. He loved using his tools for many projects such as remodeling his home, working in his yard, or helping his children with projects. Some of Dennis's favorite hobbies were target shooting, yard work, tinkering in the garage, and also working on his cars. When he wasn't working on his cars, he was always willing to lend his expertise to his children and friends. Dennis and Shirley lived humbly and were an example of charity. They touched the lives of not just their children but many other families through acts of service and charitable contributions. He is survived by his children, Robert (Angie) Osness, Mary (Jerry) Duke, Donald (Danylle) Osness, and Donna (Wes) Brown; and siblings, Kelley Carter, and Mark Sawyer. Preceded in death by wife, Shirley: son, Larry Osness; granddaughters, Mary Ann Duke, and Desaray Brown Odekirk; and brother, Larry Sawyer. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 15, 11:00 a.m., at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road in Taylorsville, where a viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to funeral services.
