David Earl Estey

David Earl Estey, age 90, passed away May 1, 2018 at the V.A. Nursing Home. Born July 3, 1927 in Salt Lake City, the son of George Henry and Annabel Blanche Larrabee Estey. Graduated from West High School in 1944. Operated a Multilith Duplicator at the Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield in an IBM warehouse manned by all Navy personnel (he being the only civilian). Enlisted in the Navy March 1945. Graduated from the Naval Training School (Printer) in Anacostia, DC and was there when WWII ended in August. Assigned to the Navy News (Manila) and the Sangley Point Naval Air Station in Cavite in the Philippine Islands. Served aboard the USS Dixie (AD-14) and the USS Prairie (AD-15) Destroyer Tenders during his tour of duty in Tsingtao, China. Employed by Salt Lake Desk Exchange from 1954 until 1966, Kelly Company from 1966 to 1970. Worked for the United States Postal service as a Special Delivery Messenger from 1970 until retiring in 1990. Joined the Disabled American Veterans Argonne Chapter 2 in 1948 and transferred to the James R. Thomas, Jr. Chapter 6 in 1962. Became active in the DAV upon retiring from the USPS. Held many positions in Chapter 6 including Chapter Commander. Served as State Department Commander 2008-2009 and with the Chapter 6 Honor Guard from 1990 until he was forced to quit in 2010 because of health issues. Life member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion. Worked at the Phillips 66 Service Station in Holladay where he met the love of his life, Gertrude (Trudy) Anderson. Worked with Trudy at the bakery & caf at ZCMI Cottonwood Mall until his health made it necessary to quit. Married Trudy August 5, 2000 in Bountiful, Utah. Was a member of the Towne Family Association. His ancestor, Mary Towne Estey, wife of Isaac Estey of Topsfield, Massachusetts, was a victim of the Salem witchcraft hysteria in 1692. Survived by his 10 sons and daughters, Joyce Carol, William Bruce, Marijo Ann Hansen, Glenn Earl (John) Dale David, Linda Janel, Steven Thomas, Pattilyn Janet Russon, Laura Ann (Spencer) Pedersen, Jeff Davis; sister Violet Louise (Gale) Anderson; many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents; brother Wayne Leland; son-in-law Christopher Russon; granddaughter Danyell Russon; sister, Naomi Pearl (Frank); son-in-law Finn Hansen; grandson Jared D'Hulst. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 7, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, where viewings will be held Sunday, May 6th, 6-9:00 p.m. and prior to services on Monday from 10-10:45 a.m. Interment, Murray City Cemetery.
